quick week in review...

kanga!

I'm desperately trying to get my pics up, but unfortunately Curtin has decided to be jerks and they made all these restrictions on campus internet access. I have webshots desktop in order to post large groups of pictures, but when I go to do so I get a connection error because it doesn't know what port to connect to...so, hopefully I can solve this soon...

Last weekend -

Friday night was the greatly anticipated *ahem* quizbowl for all the new international students. Prizes sucked and I was feeling very much under the weather. As soon as it ended, I took some sudafed and called it a night.

Saturday - after some grocery shopping and a relaxing day, I felt a lot better. A big group of us decided to discover Northbridge that night and so we called a maxi taxi. Northbridge is a popular section in Perth for nightlife. Streets are filled with different pubs and nightclubs. For my very first night out we hit up the Deen first. Huge place that was extremely crowded...since I was on cold medication I didn't consume many beverages and this place was definitely one in which you ought to be decently intoxicated to enjoy yourself. We then briefly went to the Mustang Bar before about half of us headed back to campus.

For a "small" capital city - it clearly has a lot more to do than elon or tr!!

Sunday - the amazing Race around Perth
My advisor Nathan had arranged this massive savenger hunt for all of us American students. We started at 10AM on Curtin's Campus. We were spilt into groups of about 5. Later on we all took a bus into the city, ate lunch, and continued our fun. Apparently, I get a little competitive with these sorts of things because while other groups we taking their time, shopping, or drinking beer - I egged my team on to keep going! It was a clever way for us to discover the city though and when it was all said and done - my team won, we scored some funny pictures, and stole a brick ;)
...Nathan still owes us our prize...

Monday, August 1st was the start of classes. I thought my schedule was all figured out and even though I have an 8am on Monday's, I was still eager to go. I'm taking Intro. to Broadcast (w/emphasis on radio), Television News, and I was taking Media and Indigenous Issues as my Australian study...but they decided on Tuesday that they would just cancel the course all together. So now I'm enrolled in a Public Relations type class on Tuesday, which I missed the first lecture and tutorial for...opps! I only have classes 3x a week, with a free Wed & Fri.

I'm probably interning for a radio station in the city once a week and possibly working on a film documentary on Margaret River in the upcoming weeks. Details are yet to come, but Ian (kind of like our head Elon study abroad advisor while we're here) hooked me up with these great opportunities and hopefully they'll be able to count for credit back home as well!

So with the first week of classes done, a few of us decided to discover King's Park on Friday. We spent the morning taking in the gorgeous scenery and then went back into the city for lunch and afternoon shopping. In the evening we ventured into Northbridge again - it was a lot more fun than the week before and we tried out some new places.

Within the next few days I will be finalizing my plans for our first semester break. I'll keep ya posted!
